Brandy (apocopation of brandewijn; Dutch burned wine) is a liquor obtained from the distillation of wine, almost always with a 36-40% (60%) on volume of ethanol. Additional wine, the alcohol can also be made from pulp of grape juice or fermented fruit. Unless you say otherwise, brandy is made from wine grapes.
The origin of brandy is not quite clear. Alcohol beverage concentrates are known in ancient Greece and Rome and may have an even more ancient history, from ancient Babylon. Brandy is known as today, appeared in the twelfth century and became popular in the fourteenth century.
Initially wine was distilled as a preservation method for easier transport to the merchants. The intention was to add back the water separated in the distillation of the brandy shortly before consumption. Then it was discovered that was stored in wooden casks, the resulting product is improved considerably compared to the original wine.
